While <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stephjacobsondesigns/">my Instagram</a> is great for quickly posting things, it is difficult to go back and find what I'm looking for in my feed, and quite often, there aren't a lot of details about a project. I'm going to attempt to share more here in 2024. Going along with my 2024 intention that I'll post on January 1, I'll be spending a lot of time decluttering and organizing my sewing space...again. (Were you around for the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/organizedsewingspace2017/">#organizedsewingspace2017</a> attempt?) Photographic evidence that the state of my sewing room is as messy as ever.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSScGiru1p3ezPYtff4RmFWDDqf9LCh4pPID0EMhvI65-rmMtRDke4qiOzdnHz7KB0-4CSZTlNvLZpO4oMSsT3W0j3br8rrtZTteYdgQd5wIFlf5Qc4LPI6M-3NJZsYDtiDZKowt5KsL3wfKj7BGWxmKcwLn3e-nDoorcsKu5T47-HiN08IgLPPuHyMDQ/s4000/20231221_073937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="3000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSScGiru1p3ezPYtff4RmFWDDqf9LCh4pPID0EMhvI65-rmMtRDke4qiOzdnHz7KB0-4CSZTlNvLZpO4oMSsT3W0j3br8rrtZTteYdgQd5wIFlf5Qc4LPI6M-3NJZsYDtiDZKowt5KsL3wfKj7BGWxmKcwLn3e-nDoorcsKu5T47-HiN08IgLPPuHyMDQ/w300-h400/20231221_073937.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p>During the decluttering and organizing, I'll be finishing up projects so they can head off to more useful places than my overly-full sewing room. I'll be sharing those completed projects here along with tips I've picked up throughout my years of sewing and quilting.</p><p>Due to my work schedule and time constraints, I've decided not to host another BOM again this year. I am currently writing quilt block patterns for a beginner sampler quilt for my 4-H quilt club, and I will be posting those as free downloads available in <a href="https://payhip.com/StephJacobsonDesigns">my Payhip shop</a>. If you are a beginner sewer/quilter, want an simple project to work on, or know someone that wants to learn how to quilt, feel free to sew along with me and my 4-H students! My 4-H club meets the third Tuesday or each month, and I'm challenging myself to have the patterns for that month complete and uploaded to Payhip during the first week of each month.</p><p>Happy sewing!</p><p><br /></p>Steph Jacobsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01294296188566183219noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2941952885921460555.post-13651582913820240802022-12-03T10:47:00.008-06:002022-12-03T10:47:57.598-06:00Modern HST BOM 2022 {December Block!}<p>Well we made it! Here is the final block for the 2022 Modern HST BOM. I appreciate your patience this year. I've been back to work full-time for a few years now and that combined with having a very busy high school sophomore, I find I have less quilting and creating time. I only got a few of the blocks made this year, but Zina and I have so enjoyed seeing what your create each month. As I mentioned last month, we will not be hosting a BOM in 2023 but are open to the idea of creating and hosting another BOM in the future. </p><p>I created the final December block.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvNmNduQKSrX33jPYZ-6WR5wbbV5sk_8-NqapO4PiaZkDhI2Kx2BzWBvR-X3gJb2E9pb2GnuftxcIH-ZvpoftiaMW8ImVLMAiTk4gBBvw4tQ2E8C9o15mfwzjvlk_V6U0WnfpMdK-8gPqdfsIe4Ue-cLhwYVtR0geLDXyNUkZHr3wGuGnCw1rRHEM/s1200/Sample%20HST%20HRT%2011%20(1).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvNmNduQKSrX33jPYZ-6WR5wbbV5sk_8-NqapO4PiaZkDhI2Kx2BzWBvR-X3gJb2E9pb2GnuftxcIH-ZvpoftiaMW8ImVLMAiTk4gBBvw4tQ2E8C9o15mfwzjvlk_V6U0WnfpMdK-8gPqdfsIe4Ue-cLhwYVtR0geLDXyNUkZHr3wGuGnCw1rRHEM/w400-h400/Sample%20HST%20HRT%2011%20(1).JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>For this block, here are the block units you will need.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2P04aNXPPiRQ1_LXqP0V8d8PNPjHYcab-NI2dJKpI864yRuA1LKnTKhcmapnMjigcnEN2X15bLZTioUlQP-fJjcYIhZt3sb2omEGhSy-BXKqTtXQsgaWfNit-HFcUvcAQURCHME7Wl6ygICRa-GUsaT3iPUBlUHAfqoHeFC2ImT0Hf8UaTYIQHwmS/s2000/Modern%20HST%20BOM%202022%20December.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2P04aNXPPiRQ1_LXqP0V8d8PNPjHYcab-NI2dJKpI864yRuA1LKnTKhcmapnMjigcnEN2X15bLZTioUlQP-fJjcYIhZt3sb2omEGhSy-BXKqTtXQsgaWfNit-HFcUvcAQURCHME7Wl6ygICRa-GUsaT3iPUBlUHAfqoHeFC2ImT0Hf8UaTYIQHwmS/w400-h400/Modern%20HST%20BOM%202022%20December.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As far as assembling your completed quilt top, you can sew them together however your like! During the month of November, <a href="https://learn.accuquilt.com/go-getters">AccuQuilt GO! Getters</a> are sharing some fun project ideas to help you Deck Your Halls for the holidays!</p><p>Today I'm sharing a tutorial for a cute and easy tree ornament. I don't do much decorating for the holidays, but I do love putting up our Christmas tree each year. It's always fun to see the ornaments we have collected over the years with some of my favorite being the handmade treasures my son made in preschool and elementary school. I also like purchasing ornaments during trips and vacations as a reminder of our time together.</p><p>Making your own ornament is a fun project. Since all the sewing is done by hand, it's a great opportunity to relax and create during the hectic holiday season.</p><p>Supplies:</p><p></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=537450&u=2174538&m=50439&urllink=www%2Eaccuquilt%2Ecom%2Fgo%2Dholiday%2Dmedley%2Ddie%2Ehtml&afftrack=">AccuQuilt GO! (There aren't any bonus blocks this year, but I will be releasing some of the blocks we didn't choose for the BOM throughout the year. They're just too good not to use and will make some awesome quilts!) You can use any size block unit you like, and the half rectangle triangles will be a 1:2 ratio. I am using the <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=537450&u=2174538&m=50439&urllink=&afftrack=" style="color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none;">AccuQuilt GO! Half Rectangle Triangle Die (3" x 6" Finished)</a>. My 16 patch blocks will be a whopping 24" x 24", and my completed quilt top will measure 72" x 96"! My squares and half square triangles will be 6-1/2" (6" finished), and my rectangles and half rectangle triangles will be 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" (3" x 6" finished).</span><div><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: inherit;">Zina will be using the <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=929603&u=2174538&m=68500&urllink=www%2Efatquartershop%2Ecom%2Fsplit%2Drects%2Druler&afftrack=" style="color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none;">Deb Tucker Studio 180 Split Rect Ruler</a> which is available from many online shops including <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=929603&u=2174538&m=68500&urllink=&afftrack=" style="color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none;">Fat Quarter Shop</a>. With this ruler, you can make multiple sizes of half retangle triangles in the 1:2 ratio needed for the BOM. Zina is also making 6" finished block units (24" finished monthly quilt block). We like big blocks!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div>The great thing is you don't need a fancy die cutter or ruler to make half rectangle triangles. When doing some research online, I stumbled across <a href="https://swimbikequilt.com/journal/2019/09/half-rectangle-triangles-tips-tricks-and-tutorials-a-new-series.html" style="color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none;">this AMAZING 2019 blog post series</a> from <a href="https://swimbikequilt.com/" style="color: #2288bb; text-decoration-line: none;">Swim. Today it's my turn to share the quilt (top) I made for Covering the World: One Quilt at a Time. (I spent so long writing up this post and tutorial I didn't get my top quilted yet!) In 2022, <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=537450&u=2174538&m=50439&urllink=www%2Eaccuquilt%2Ecom%2F&afftrack=">AccuQuilt</a>, <a href="https://modafabrics.com/">Moda Fabrics</a> and <a href="https://babylock.com/">Baby Lock</a> are partnering in this pay-it-forward campaign. Moda and <a href="https://learn.accuquilt.com/go-getters">AccuQuilt designers</a> (like me!) will make and donate one quilt a week to a charity of their choice to support this campaign. </p><p>For those of you that know me, you know I love creating quilts with half square triangles. For my <a href="https://blog.accuquilt.com/quilt-the-world-2022">Covering the World</a> quilt, I designed a fun and colorful patchwork heart quilt using half square triangles. To make fabric selection easy, I used <a href="https://www.freespiritfabrics.com/rainbow-bio-multi/">Rainbow Bio - Multi</a> fabric designed by <a href="https://www.freespiritfabrics.com/adrienne-leban-1/">Adrienne Leban</a> for <a href="https://www.freespiritfabrics.com/">FreeSpirit Fabrics</a> which paired perfectly with <a href="https://www.freespiritfabrics.com/fairy-dust-whisper/">Fairy Dust - Whisper</a> by <a href="https://www.freespiritfabrics.com/tula-pink/">Tula Pink</a> for the background.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAzFD787EXPmGx8l_foWFdh6rUamHdx2UtK0F7xe4SFKsm9e3YUuAZCvCVsDVKBQ-UH8AalqMBt-6U8PQ3aAMCJhs4Xj2UrKjFtRku0BRZkZuaoTVC9RmdBmIiJxZ3_l1QvBdiRTysWpBI0Jr_X6jliuQ7p3mYgxLapM8GQH2jKNeNizthi_XDeaHo/s2929/IMG_20220415_203850_463.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="freespirit rainbow fabric" border="0" data-original-height="2929" data-original-width="2929" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAzFD787EXPmGx8l_foWFdh6rUamHdx2UtK0F7xe4SFKsm9e3YUuAZCvCVsDVKBQ-UH8AalqMBt-6U8PQ3aAMCJhs4Xj2UrKjFtRku0BRZkZuaoTVC9RmdBmIiJxZ3_l1QvBdiRTysWpBI0Jr_X6jliuQ7p3mYgxLapM8GQH2jKNeNizthi_XDeaHo/w400-h400/IMG_20220415_203850_463.jpg" title="pretty fabric displayed on wood fence" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: left;">The benefit of using a rainbow or ombre fabric is you get multiple coordinating colors and patterns to create a cohesive patchwork rainbow by purchasing yardage!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguc6Dhe91HgDhMMz3GpwmH45gf0iY-as3gEimZf5nmut65-GNKGC43Mcg2nztgob2pYuv2xHSPCjsytnggNmop4AHbHgem62G_NogmAkGX13CZ4cRFP8hKDJ4q7q1gwcNAk8Z8rjZAiEOpXvucB1yivv4smP8S7iVlw7jt3qfFxbHGV5stNlwng1Yi/s2280/20220421_094920%20(1).jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2280" data-original-width="2280" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguc6Dhe91HgDhMMz3GpwmH45gf0iY-as3gEimZf5nmut65-GNKGC43Mcg2nztgob2pYuv2xHSPCjsytnggNmop4AHbHgem62G_NogmAkGX13CZ4cRFP8hKDJ4q7q1gwcNAk8Z8rjZAiEOpXvucB1yivv4smP8S7iVlw7jt3qfFxbHGV5stNlwng1Yi/w400-h400/20220421_094920%20(1).jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p style="text-align: left;">Because I like to use BIG HST blocks to make quick quilts, and this quilt finished at 48" square.</p><p style="text-align: left;"><b>Dies Used:</b></p><p style="text-align: left;"></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=537450&u=2174538&m=50439&urllink=www%2Eaccuquilt%2Ecom%2Fgo%2Dhalf%2Dsquare%2Dtriangle%2D6%2Dfinished%2Dsquare%2Ddie%2Ehtml&afftrack=">GO! After a crazy holiday season and the never-ending Covid pandemic, Zina and I took January off to plan the 2022 Modern Half Square Triangle BOM. Somehow January is already over which brings us to our first block! This year, we are adding in half rectangle triangles which is going to add a lot of fun angles to the BOM. </p>All of the blocks for the 2022 HST BOM will be 16 patches. (There aren't any bonus blocks this year, but I will be releasing some of the blocks we didn't choose for the BOM throughout the year. They're just too good not to use and will make some awesome quilts!) You can use any size block unit you like, and the half rectangle triangles will be a 1:2 ratio. I am using the <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=537450&u=2174538&m=50439&urllink=&afftrack=">AccuQuilt GO! Half Rectangle Triangle Die (3" x 6" Finished)</a> My 16 patch blocks will be a whopping 24" x 24", and my completed quilt top will measure 72" x 96"! My squares and half square triangles will be 6-1/2" (6" finished), and my rectangles and half rectangle triangles will be 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" (3" x 6" finished).<div><br /></div><div>Zina will be using the <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=929603&u=2174538&m=68500&urllink=www%2Efatquartershop%2Ecom%2Fsplit%2Drects%2Druler&afftrack=">Deb Tucker Studio 180 Split Rect Ruler</a> which is available from many online shops including <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=929603&u=2174538&m=68500&urllink=&afftrack=">Fat Quarter Shop</a>. With this ruler, you can make multiple sizes of half retangle triangles in the 1:2 ratio needed for the BOM. Zina is also making 6" finished block units (24" finished monthly quilt block). We like big blocks!</div><div><br /></div><div>The great thing is you don't need a fancy die cutter or ruler to make half rectangle triangles. When doing some research online, I stumbled across <a href="https://swimbikequilt.com/journal/2019/09/half-rectangle-triangles-tips-tricks-and-tutorials-a-new-series.html">this AMAZING 2019 blog post series</a> from <a href="https://swimbikequilt.com/">Swim. I really meant to post this earlier, but somehow it's almost Thanksgiving. Better late than never, I suppose!</p><p>The 2021 Modern HST BOM is made up of 2 different sizes of blocks... 4x4 square blocks and 3x4 (or 4x3) rectangular blocks. If you made the monthly blocks, you will have 12 blocks to make your quilt top. If you also made the 4 bonus blocks, you will have 16 blocks for your quilt top.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeVgvXXZPcBfyOU1VdLADpZedr9cakLkDUSxcXzsyJ2g_QaWh68TUM-tmwAu88chfq4K3pMg4MaPG2VRLvjPQAH9mhvqphba4eUTun1BokMcbxhe2qko7UiHVJBQmJjnWcsITPjn0pXkc/s2000/2021+List+of+Blocks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeVgvXXZPcBfyOU1VdLADpZedr9cakLkDUSxcXzsyJ2g_QaWh68TUM-tmwAu88chfq4K3pMg4MaPG2VRLvjPQAH9mhvqphba4eUTun1BokMcbxhe2qko7UiHVJBQmJjnWcsITPjn0pXkc/w400-h400/2021+List+of+Blocks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p style="text-align: left;">You are welcome to assemble your blocks any way you like, and I love seeing how creative everyone is with their layouts. I always go for simple and straightforward, so here are 2 basic layouts you can use. If you made all 16 blocks, you can make a quilt with 4 rows of 4 blocks per row. Each row will have two 4x4 blocks and two 3x4 blocks. (I used a gray background to highlight the blocks, but now I think the blocks would look good with sashing and borders!)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9UuQ3uzCSbNocRkTVa34n2CubcGTZlJmYR3fUdF6mDMXYHw8RY6_-Pwy5cOMNhjhtewbTlvd4AZjABUmps7zMATonqE4nLizxBgLCiUmCkm5qwLFMyamcHTBJ3_L3cZd4qPhfbr7o2_Y/s2048/2021+HST+BOM+16+Block+Layout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1841" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9UuQ3uzCSbNocRkTVa34n2CubcGTZlJmYR3fUdF6mDMXYHw8RY6_-Pwy5cOMNhjhtewbTlvd4AZjABUmps7zMATonqE4nLizxBgLCiUmCkm5qwLFMyamcHTBJ3_L3cZd4qPhfbr7o2_Y/w360-h400/2021+HST+BOM+16+Block+Layout.jpg" width="360" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: left;">This is the layout I used to assemble my quilt top. I assembled the blocks in order by month (row 1: January - April; row 2: May-August; row 3: September-December) and used the four bonus blocks as the fourth row. I made my blocks with 4-1/2" half square triangles (4" finished) so my completed quilt is 56" x 64" which is a great lap/throw size.</p><p style="text-align: left;">If you have 12 blocks, you can make 3 colums with 4 blocks in each column. Each column will have two 4x4 blocks and two 4x3 blocks.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx0bpHJ-khE7GHc7VYRwzU8E-8mgO1bdy488zgm7goNiutDXnbPAIRBM9Zr-bimxKKY0X6IuygjhhX8wyNRwrhAPP4pxgoE7_l-fmwY5gYGenLGbQxOz2hsKZp2ANpcUInx6uVgMoezSg/s2048/2021+HST+BOM+12+Block+Layout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1706" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx0bpHJ-khE7GHc7VYRwzU8E-8mgO1bdy488zgm7goNiutDXnbPAIRBM9Zr-bimxKKY0X6IuygjhhX8wyNRwrhAPP4pxgoE7_l-fmwY5gYGenLGbQxOz2hsKZp2ANpcUInx6uVgMoezSg/w334-h400/2021+HST+BOM+12+Block+Layout.jpg" width="334" /></a></div><br /><p style="text-align: left;">If you decide to go with one of these basic layouts, you can assemble your blocks in any order you would like. Feel free to play around with layouts! I actually have my quilt done, quilted and bound. I even got it submitted to QuiltCon 2022 in Phoenix and am nervously awaiting to find out if it was accepted to the show. I'm looking forward to sharing my completed quilt after the final block is released on December 1.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Huge thanks to my cohostess <a href="https://www.instagram.com/zanymouse/">Zina</a> for coming up with these layouts. I hope she doesn't mind me sharing her initial sketch, but it is such a good reminder of how the design process starts. July is one of my favorite months for a few reasons. I love the 4th of July! Not so much the fireworks...but the food, friends & family, parades, festivities and all-around love of the U.S.A. makes me so happy! Also, my birthday is July 12, so I like to spend the first 12 days of the month celebrating. I'll be 45 this year, and life is good!</p><p><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;">But enough about that!
