#gomakeaquiltblock

Hey...remember me? Yeah. It's been awhile. I've been doing stuff. I swear. There's proof on flickr and instagram. But another year is almost over, and I didn't get nearly as much accomplished as I wanted to. Again. I like to use the excuses that I have an active almost-8-year-old son and work full-time. In reality, I waste an obscene amount of time on the internet. So...for 2015, my main goal is to stay off the computer and #gomakeaquiltblock. Every time I get the urge to check my e-mail, refresh my facebook feed, peruse Craigslist for stuff I don't need, or pin a billion more things on Pinterest, I will instead #gomakeaquiltblock. (Seriously...have you seen my Pinterest? I think I've got enough project ideas.) Now I'm sure my husband would prefer 2015 to be the year of #gocleanthebathroom, #gowashthedishes or #goorganizeyoursewingroom, but this is my resolution--not his! Basically, instead of wasting 5, 10, 15 or more minutes on the computer/internet, I will resist the urge and #gomakeaquiltblock. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a quilt block. Just #godosomething. Who's with me? :)

Valentine's Day infinity scarf

Sew, Mama, Sew is having a Little Gifts of Love Challenge. So I made a little gift for myself...a heart day infinity scarf. (My 7-year-old son served as photographer for this photo shoot, and I think he did a great job!)

There are so many tutorials out there and I can't even find the one I originally used. I've made so many at this point I don't need the instructions anymore. If you want to make your own, there's a good tutorial here. I usually use knit fabric but for this one I used a lightweight cotton fabric I bought at Joann's several years ago. I can't remember exactly why I purchased it, but I think I had this crazy idea I was going to make Valentine's Day candy bags for my son's daycare class. Yeah...didn't happen.

See...some days I do make an effort...cute skinny jeans and boots, trendy (from a few years ago) turquoise/red color combo, actually wearing earrings. I also just colored my hair to cover the gray. I was feeling a little crazy at Target and went with medium auburn...it's pretty red. I'm not sure what my husband is going to think of that. I was sucked in by the claims of 100% gray coverage and the "promise" of looking 10 years younger. I'm not really 27...I just look like it. :)

And of course there is dog poop on the ground right behind me. Figures.  Happy Valentine's Day!

weekly wrap-up {1/26/14}

Well...that comeback was short-lived. *sigh* Here's the post that was supposed to go up last Sunday. There's no pictures. *sigh* I really wish blogger made it easier to use pictures from instagram and flickr and facebook.

What we ate. . .
One of my goals this year is to help out more with the cooking duties and to actually try some of the 175+ recipes I have pinned so I can either delete them or move them over to my recipe success board.
  • breakfast egg omelet muffins:  Easy and delicious!
  • oven-baked chicken tacos:  One of my go-to favorite recipes though I omit the peppers and canned tomatoes to keep everyone (mostly me) happy.  Bonus is there's lots of leftovers for more tacos or nachos.
  • world's best chicken:  I don't know about "world's best" but it was quick and easy and the chicken was really juicy. The leftovers made for some pretty yummy chicken salad for lunch (chopped up the chicken with pecans, Craisins, Miracle Whip and a spoon of dijon mustard).
  • cream cheese lemon bars:  These are my go-to dessert and I made them for the Omaha Modern Quilt Guild sew in on Saturday. I'm usually disappointed with cake mix recipes but this one is delicious.
 What we did. . .
  • I took my son the the boys' high school basketball game on Friday night. It's hard to believe it's been 20+ years since I spent most of my Friday/Saturday nights doing that.
  • My son had his first basketball practice Friday evening from 8:15-9:30pm. They're seven years old. Apparently gym time is a little hard to come by.
  • My son and I went to the Omaha Modern Quilt Guild sew in on Saturday and made charity quilt blocks.
  • My husband and I had a rare date night Saturday night to celebrate my friend's birthday...dinner at Kobe Steakhouse then drinks after. We stayed out until midnight which is so late for us!
  • In preparation for the Lincoln Half-Marathon in May, I ran 5 miles on the treadmill on Sunday...that is the farthest I have ever run. I can't believe I ran for almost an hour.
Hopefully I can get back on track with my blogging goal and figure out an easy way to get pictures into my posts.

my return to blogging

I have been horrible about blogging lately. . .like for the past 6 months. And I miss it. I miss reading your kind and encouraging comments. I miss making new bloggy friends and discovering your amazing & inspiring blogs. And as 2013 came and went in a flash, I am trying to look back and remember what happened and what I accomplished amidst the day-to-day frenzy. I know I did stuff but since I didn't blog about it, I don't have a record of it. So starting Sunday I'm going to attempt to blog a review of what happened in my life that week. . .not just crafty stuff, but family stuff, the Pinterest recipes I actually tried, my progress on training for the Lincoln Half-Marathon in May, books I've read, etc. I need proof that I'm doing more than just getting through each day and if I can't find anything to share for the week I obviously wasn't engaged enough (and probably spent way too much time on the computer or in front of the TV). I need to be reminded how lucky I am. . .because I know I am but I can so easily forget.

I know it's Tuesday but why not start now? I can't believe 2014 is well underway and we're almost to the end of January. My son turned 7 and I still can't believe how quickly he's growing up. My husband and I both ended up getting his birthday off work so we celebrated with a bowling outing.

Things started off pretty well. . .
Pouting because he's losing.
More pouting.
Pretending to have fun.
Pretty good form!
The thrill of victory!
And the agony of defeat.
More defeat.

 Good times!
